The government is organising emergency charter flights to evacuate British tourists stranded in Jamaica, as the death toll from Hurricane Melissa continues to rise.
The UK government has chartered flights to help British nationals leave Jamaica in the wake of Hurricane Melissa. As many as 8,000 Britons are understood to be on the Caribbean Island. The Foreign Office has urged them to register their presence to receive updates on the disaster response.

Storm-stirring swipe hurtles towards Britain as Hurricane Melissa leaves trail of chaos
Devastating Hurricane Melissa could be about to take a storm-stirring swipe at Britain. Jamaica, Cuba, the Bahamas and later this week, Bermuda, are reeling from the Category-5 monster, one of the biggest to hit the region this century.
Hundreds of British travellers will be stranded on the island by the cancellations. The Foreign Office has a helpline for UK citizens in Jamaica who need support. The FCDO says: “Contact Consular Support at 876-936-0700 (Select Option 2).”
Melissa will bring heavy rain from the Mid-Atlantic to New England as it heads toward Bermuda and Canada. It leaves a trail of destruction in the Caribbean.
